Maxine comic. Back to work.

The new year is finally here! (Thank Goodness)

That means we have yet another year to make a difference! Now that you’ve gotten some much-needed rest and spent time with family and friends, you’ve probably come to the realization that you have to get back to the ever so joyful, day-to-day routine of work *cue collective groans*.

However, there’s a sure fire way of making sure that you don’t start the year off with a groan. And that is…

Having a plan is a great way to make sure you have your priorities in order. It gives you a great way to know when to do things and how to do them. Planning effectively leaves you with less surprises and allows you to have more control over your work. Here’s a basic three step plan to get you going.

It makes the big picture more bite sized.

1. Start by setting your Career Goals.

What do you really want to achieve this year? Is it increased productivity? Is it better time management? Are you going to finally get around to learning that new skill or taking that exam you’ve been putting off? Write that down somewhere. Having a clear objective helps you know what to work toward. And if you can’t quite figure out a goal that works, here’s a helpful article to start with.

2. Make your tasks a tad bit smaller

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time…

Don’t try to do all the big things at once. Break down your responsibilities into more manageable daily/weekly goals. That way, you not only get your work done, but you also get a feeling of accomplishment. That little mental boost goes a long way to help you get the motivation you need to handle what comes next.

3. Keep track of your tasks

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” ― George Berkeley

How are you going to know what you’ve done if you don’t keep track of it?

One tool to help keep you on track this new year is Trello. It’s a free service that aims to keep your tasks neat, tidy and trackable. It’s the perfect space to get started with your if you haven’t already. And it’s sure to keep your productivity levels high as long as you stick with it.

The best way to make this new year yours is by looking past today and into the future. And as long as you’ve got your priorities straight, you get to conquer the day and every day after that. Best of luck. And again, Welcome back to work 😁
