For a wholesale and retail business, GDI delivered a web-based Order Management System that facilitated an 1100% increase in orders processed.

The Challenge

Client Background

The Book House is a wholesale and retail business, servicing universities and public libraries all over the United States.

Project Objective

The company underwent a growth phase and was looking to build an online presence that would keep itself competitive in the book retailer marketplace. The project was to establish a web presence and develop a web-based Order Management System to support online operations.

The Solution

Technology Employed

ASP, ASP.NET, VB.NET, JavaScript, IIS, XML, HTML, PowerBuilder and SQL Server 7.0

Project Details:

The project encompassed development and subsequent maintenance of a system to allow Book House customers to place orders online. A robust IT infrastructure was also established; this included resolution of network problems, system administration and fine tuning.

GDI employed its standard Project Management methodology for managing all the aspects of this engagement. A team of highly skilled IT professionals was deployed to develop a 3-tier system with components distributed across three servers in the same geographic location. GDI’s software development life cycle provided a quality management approach that built quality into the development process.

The Results

Since the new system was successfully delivered on time and within budget, the Book House has been reaping significant benefits. Prior to implementation, Book House processed only 5,000 order per year. There has been a mammoth increase of 1100% in the number of orders processed: the company currently processes 60, 000+ orders. Most importantly, Book House is now poised for even greater expansion with a new data model and quicker data loading capability.
